Baseball knocks off Dallas Christian College
On Saturday, the University of Dallas baseball team (1-0), in their only fall game, defeated Dallas Christian College by a score of 11-8. This was a 9-inning game.
The teams were scheduled to play a double-header on the day, but stormy conditions led to the cancellation of game 2.
UD left-fielder Devin Arnold (McKinney, TX/McKinney H.S.) scored two runs, going 1-for-3, with a walk, before being relieved by Alex Thornton.
Other notable Crusader performances were turned in by designated hitter Steven Hansen, who also went 1-for-3, in addtion to accumulating a walk, a strikeout, and an RBI; shortstop David Rettinger (San Antonio, TX/Central Catholic H.S.), who scored two runs and had an RBI, plus two walks; and right-fielder Divante Goodsby, who in three at-bats had two hits, scored two runs, and had three RBI before being substituted for by Luke Kersting (Napa, CA/Trinity H.S.).
Pitching wise, Philip Carkuff (Marietta, GA/The Lovett School) recorded the win for Dallas in allowing just one hit, one walk, and one run in four innings of work. Carkuff had six strikeouts.
Michael Sweiss (Parker, CO/Chaparral H.S.) pitched 1 2/3 innings in the closer's role. He fared well in allowing no hits or runs, and striking out two.
Ruben Salinas was pegged with the loss for Dallas Christian.
UD is scheduled to begin their 2010-11 regular season on Feb. 5, at Hendrix College.
