Preview: 2010-11 Women's Basketball
Under the direction of first year head coach Jina Johansen, the University of Dallas women's basketball team will tip off their season against Southwestern University on Monday, Nov. 15, at 5:30 p.m.
Looking to build off their 15-13 campaign from the 2009-10 season, five upperclassmen return for the Lady Crusaders -- they are: senior guard Bethany Roessler (Phoenix, Ariz./Xavier College Prep), senior forward/center Joirdan Cole (Plano, Texas/Bishop Lynch H.S.), senior forward Cara Sczepanski (Plano, Texas/Bishop Lynch H.S.), junior guard Christina Rampellini (Trophy Club, Texas/Northwest H.S.), and junior guard Kelly Regan (Plano, Texas/John Paul II H.S.).
Sczepanski, in her junior campaign, became the UD Women's Basketball school record holder for career points scored (1,437). Additionally, the 2009-10 Association of Division III Independents (AD3I) First Team selection holds the school record for free throws, field goals, and field goal percentage. She was a dominating force throughout the season, finishing with 16 double doubles, and averaging 18.9 points to go along with 9.6 rebounds per game.
Meanwhile, a stout pair of sophomore guards return, in Kylie Yoshimura (Temple City, Cali./Mark Keppel H.S.), and Hannah Barrera (San Antonio, Texas/St. Anthony Catholic H.S.).
Yoshimura, a 2009-10 AD3I Second Team selection, is looking to build off her freshman campaign, in which she was named UD Rookie of the Year for Women's Basketball. In just her first season, Kylie set the UD season record for assists, finishing with 141 on the year. She was a big contributor to UD's success, finishing second on the team in points, averaging 13.1 to go along with an average of five assists per game.
Freshmen should factor heavily into the mix for coach Johansen, as newcomers to the team include: guard Devan Tardy (Houston, Texas/Manvel H.S.), point guard Andrea Jauregui (Madrid, Spain/American School of Madrid), guard Kristy Mooring (Antonito, Colo./Casa Grade H.S.), freshman forward Tabrina Webb (Carrollton, TX/Lewisville H.S.), guard Kia Grable (Wathena, Kan./Troy H.S.), forward Christy Allen (Burton, Mich./St. Thomas More Academy), and Katie Muth.
