Preview: 2011 Women's Lacrosse
The University of Dallas women's lacrosse team is set to have their best season in program history. With the addition of several experienced players and losing no players to graduation from 2010, the team is in position to win games.
Dallas will play most of their games on the road, with only four home games this year. They are led by the winningest coach in Dallas history, Will Oakley, whom is back in the fold for his third season with the team. Coach Oakley is assisted by Collin Palomares. The University of Dallas roster features 15 players from all classes.
Representing the senior class, two-time captain and two-time MVP midfielder Christine McFarland (Floral Park, N.Y./Floral Park H.S.) returns for her last season as a Crusader. Hannah Piper (Lake Charles, La./St. Louis Catholic H.S.) and Meghan Frost (Bandera, Texas/Northshore H.S.) will be on defense, playing for their fourth season at Dallas. Kelli Fuentes (Rowlett, TX/Rowlett H.S.), will also be playing defense. Goalie Anna Massey (Amarillo, Texas/River Road H.S.) will be playing in the net for her third season of women's lacrosse at UD.
For the junior class, Katherine Dautenhaun (Tulsa, Okla./Tulsa School of Arts & Science) and Becky Williams (Lyman, S.C./Marianapolis Prep) return for their third season of DIII women's lacrosse, with Dautenhaun on attack and Williams on defense. Julianne Watkins (South Bend, Ind./St. Joseph's H.S.) and Teresa Tesoriero (Phoenix, Ariz./Veritas Prep) will also be playing defense.
Returning sophomore Mary Salotto (Salt Lake City, Utah/Skyline H.S.) will be playing midfield and Irene Harris (Cockeysvile, Md./Maryvale Preparatory) will be on attack.
Four freshman join the team this year: Celina Gonzalez will join McFarland and Salotto at midfield, while Tiffany Tran (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown H.S.) and Rose Sweeny (Bolingbrook, Ill./Benet Academy) will round out the attack. Samantha Mason (Elgin, Ill./Elgin H.S.) will also play attack and back-up goalie.
The captains for the 2011 season are Christine McFarland, Hannah Piper, and Becky Willliams.
The opening games for Women's Lacrosse are on February 18th and 19th in Jackson, Miss., where they will face Millsaps College and Tennessee Wesleyan.
