Crusaders Knock Off Southwestern Adventist University 51-36

IRVING, Texas - The University of Dallas women's basketball team began February with a 51-36 win over Southwestern Adventist University on Saturday evening. The Crusaders (2-18) scored 28 points in the paint as three different Crusaders reached double-figures in points. UD held SWAU (4-13) to a 1-17 (20.6 percent) mark from three-point range and a 20.6 percent (14-68) from the field to grab the home victory.

In the first frame the game was tied at six. Jules Oliveti (Southlake, Texas) put UD up with a made jump shot. After a made free throw Indiana Thompson delivered a made bucket followed by a Denicia Isreal three-pointer to help the Knights grab a 12-8 lead. Gracie Williams (Midwest City, Okla.) converted a trey of her own with fifty seconds remaining. Vanessa Diaz (San Antonio, Texas) finished the first out strong with a layup to help UD go up 13-12 into the second period.

Both teams traded buckets to open up the second frame but UD found its rhythm at the 6:54 mark. A 5-0 run helped Dallas go up 20-13. Both Dallas and SWAU traded buckets to end the second frame. Dallas went into the break up by four points (28-24).

UD came out of the halftime break with a 13-2 run in the third period. Starnes finished off this huge stretch with a jump shot. Diaz led the Crusaders in this frame with five points and four rebounds. Starnes and Olivetti both had four points in the third quarter.

Dallas won the fourth quarter 4-3 as Anna Stevenson (Dallas, Texas) and Williams both had two points.

Williams matched a season-high with 14 points to lead UD. Diaz had 13 points and a career-best 19 rebounds. Oliveti finished with 12 points and 12 boards. Starnes added seven points and nine rebounds.

Denicia Isreal led the Knights with 13 points. Eboni Smith went for 11 points and a team-leading 19 rebounds. Thompson followed her teammate's efforts with six points and six boards.

Dallas won the rebound battle 59-49.

Dallas matched a season-best five blocks. This is the third time the team achieved this feat this year (at Dallas Christian University and at Southwestern University).



Dallas will host Centenary College on Tuesday (2/5). First tip is set for 5:30 p.m.
